The Commonwealth Challenge

The VT-UVA rivalry has just reached the next level. With the unveiling of the Commonwealth Challenge (presented by Adelphia) the decades old war of words between fans and alumni of these two institutions will finally be expressed in a formal competition.

The winner of the Commonwealth Challenge trophy will be determined by assigning a point value to each of the athletic competitions between the two schools in 21 different sports. Where the schools don't compete head-to-head the winner will be determined by their placement in the ACC conference championships. Hokiesports.com has all the details.

Like Duke and UNC's Carlyle Cup, the Commonwealth Challenge will bring a new level of intensity to a rivalry that has already been stoked by Virginia Tech's recent move to the ACC. Watch out folks, this could get ugly.

They just made that so that uva would get some hardware. Its obvious they will never keep the Commonwealth Cup for longer than a year or so, so now they have made a new trohpy that uva can keep all the time.

Heh, keep on talking gophokie. UVa will take the Commonwealth Challenge (let's face it, VT's only advantage is in football). And if UVa wins in Charlottesville the week before Thanksgiving (giving them plenty of turkey ;) ), it will be a real embarrassment for the Hokies. No pressure guys.

Well its always a real embarassment if we lose to you guys in football.
At the same time, will be a grave embarassment to you guys if we ever win the Commonwealth Challenge.

Heh, though VT has won five of the last six Commonwealth Cups, the last three had competetive teams on both sides. While I know VT is confident in its ACC chances this year, I seriously doubt Beamer is going to take UVa lightly. That game could (much like the last two years) be seen as going either way.

However, UVa has a stronger overall sports background, and has for quite a while now. Unless this finally gives VT the motivation they need to become a real ACC school (and not just an ACC football team; the ACC is the best overall sports conference in the country), don't expect a Commonwealth Challenge win.

But I look forward to the competition. Coming from a family that has Terps, Yankees fans (I'm a O's fan), and Cowboys fans (Redskins for me), I'm used to a spirited, but friendly, rivalry.

I wish the designer of the trophy had looked at a map of Virginia. Once again, the Eastern Shore is nowhere to be seen. Reminds me of the VT Don Strock era helmets that made quick exodus when some of the Eastern Shore alumni threatened to withhold their contributions unless the map of the state on the helmet was corrected. It’s enough to give us Eastern Shore folk a complex.
